Type 1: Assignment#1 Part 2

The purpose of this assignment was "to create a series of (three) large letterform drawings using the letters supplied as a visual reference." We were assigned a letter, I was given the letter "m" and all students were given the following typefaces to choose between uppercase and lowercase of: Bodoni, Clarendon, Futura, Garamond, Univers.
This was one of my first attempts at playing around with the uppercase Futura M and its layout on the page.  I wanted to emphasize the strength in form, and hoped that it would still stand out with the ripped paper, which I liked the difference in textures but it was not successful.  The ripped paper looked more like an accident and did not work well.  I did not turn this in during the final critique.
This was my second attempt with Univers' capital M.  My hope was to show how strong the typeface is even when the paper is ripped across the letter.  The response that I received was that it may work, but still seemed slightly sloppy.  So I did not bring this piece to the final critique.

I was still liking the torn paper and was trying to see if there was some kind of combination that I could do using it.  I thought to draw emphasis to the long legs I would do a diagonal slice and distance the two pieces from each other down the wall.  The torn paper did not add to the project, so I didn't take this to the final critique either.

These were the end of my first attempt at the assignment.  I ended up keeping some of the same idea for the final pieces, but did not turn any of these in during the final critique.  I was disappointed in craftsmanship or the torn paper just did not work as well as I had intended.

*Next blog will have final designs including anatomy of a letter*
