koenig layouts. 15+ spreads. final.

cover + end flaps.

book without cropped out side  columns.

The objective of my design revolved around the idea of a coffee table book mixed with a history book. My book structure was based around the style of books during the renaissance; they had set structure with specific areas to never cross with image and text. Balance was very important in those books, and also with Koenig’s work. My thoughts were to create a book whose structure and physical design referenced Koenig’s architecture. Just like Koenig’s houses were meant to last and for one to enjoy the view and not necessarily the house; I wanted to replicate that with my book. I wanted the viewer to have easy access to the information via a fairly standard layout of information and images. My hope for this was to make the text almost invisible, for the viewer to be so engaged with the images and story itself that the typefaces used did not emote anything but older, well-loved information. With the idea of a renaissance stylebook, I only used color if already in the images that were found, I did not use color in the text, only black or white.

Sans serifs were created to help children read easier, so I figured a good place to use a sans serif then would be in the footnotes and captions, where it is just in small bits of information. The main body text and section titles are in ITC New Baskerville, to not only reference the old renaissance books, but also older books in general with their large use of serifs.

koenig. the cover options.

Below are some of the different cover images that I was working with. I was trying to find the best image to continue the portrayal of the beautiful California outside/nature and fuse that with the layout that I've been creating. All images were taken in California. I still have more text to add, but I was trying to see which image clicked the most.

kinetic motion. the final video?

This is the final animation. It is not fully finished, but it is much closer than it was. I know there are still some moments that are too slow, but I really wanted to use the whole song...which is four minutes.

Long live baby krakens.

anat cohen. promotional material finals.

the final portfolio page.

the final program cover.

billboard finals+in context.

the final animated save-the-date.

“Organized chaos” is the theme that was chosen to represent the Anat Cohen Quartet. The main element used to emphasize that was the use of a combined instrument, using pieces from each of the instruments involved in this specific quartet. That graphic element and theme was used as the primary means of communication throughout all pieces of promotional materials. The idea of four people, four instruments, four lives coming together to form something larger than oneself is the more hidden idea behind the piece; following along the use of synecdoche and hyperbole. I wanted the uniting concept to not be easily understood and then discarded. I wanted the viewers to slowly understand what the connection was, similar to when one learns to tie their shoes as a child, one day it just clicks and from then on you continue the process. The main way that I personally view design is through the idea of learning/teaching/advancing our lives; designs are the way to divide information into more easily digestible lessons or bits of data. But simplifying what and how we present all information, we add the ability to have a greater connection to the viewer and a better way to educate in a variety of ways.

Based on the concept of education and educating, audience feedback was very important for me. I remember various times in my youth seeing promotional materials for performances in Chicago, or neighborhoods and didn’t often make the connection of what the performance was and whom it was advertised to. So, I wanted to make sure that I kept in mind, how varied an audience can be; especially when stated during the meeting with a representative of the Folly Theater that the theater was attempting to attract a younger audience. In my mind, that meant advertising to more than just the normal, everyday Folly Theater or jazz music lover; which really opened up the crowd to everyone. Luckily over the years I have attained friendships with a variety of a number of people from different backgrounds, tastes, personalities and ages; often, the one linking element was the love of art and music, the ability to express. I knew, that I had the prime group to attain some feedback on my project from; I knew that they would take the time to give some honest feedback. By taking in feedback from my classmates, Sir Galloway and the other varied people, I was able to look back at the data that each group gave and figure the best way to work it into the promotional materials.

My focus for the program cover was that it would be the most intimate piece of promotional material, that being stated it was similar to the poster, but attempted to make the viewer part of the experience. The cover is set up so the two halves of the constructed instrument line the sides of the paper, with the specific event information in the center; almost like a hug, the final enclosing embrace to help one remember the intimate event. The animation focused on the fluidity of the music and the constructed instrument as one being as if in mid-dance to the fluidity, further illustrating the rhetoric tropes. As my focus for the poster was the idea of showing what the mind cannot accept, the idea of our instruments as once; the focus was therefore more on the shock and intrigue appeal, whereas with the animation, the idea was bringing together everything about the performance that I could. I brought in the actual sound of the band, as well as kept the same appeal as the poster with the main use of the combined instrument to keep the intrigue. With the animation I was also able to focus moreso on where the viewer looked, when they did and for how long. This poses potential hazards, because if I did not correctly layout the information, or timing, the viewer may lose interest and stop watching, even at only 15 seconds. But, my focus was for the animation to start and end referencing the Folly, the location of where the event was. The next piece of information was the quartet, so mentally the connection was made early in the animation that the music in the background was the Anat Cohen Quartet. Then the date and time, because all though both of those piece of information are important, the viewer can easily look up the location and artist and find the time and date.

In the class thus far, I have looked a lot closer at not only the way I work, but also the way that I should be working. It is one thing to say that you have an amazing idea, but if you don’t jump right away to that idea, if you slowly work up to the idea, there lies the potential to come up with something that could be greater than it ended up being. I have a tendency to just jump to the specifics, the end product; I love my details. But, what I often forget about is the ability to push around ideas, get feedback from multiple fellow designers, as well as the potential public/audience. Sometimes I get too caught up in the early designing that I forget to circle back, make sure everything works and goes well together…and sometimes, I even forget about my favorite step, which is the research. I re-found my love of researching in the process and how beneficial researching can be. Had I not have researched again mid-process of sketches; I would not have learned that the Folly did not want the promotional materials to focus on the saxophone, but rather the clarinet. Sometimes I assume when I shouldn’t and that could have lead to a not well-formatted piece that the client wanted. I need to remind myself to slow, stop, think and breath because I am so excited to share and show the final piece that I forget crucial steps; so I am currently trying to reteach myself to fartlek, alternate between different running paces.

koenig. the layouts take 3 + new spreads.

spreads take 3 work.

post crit with Assistant Professor Michael E. Kidwell
the main thing that I walked away with was the idea that I need to look a lot more in depth at classical layout/books. most specifically I need to look at the relation between images, text and spacing on the pages. so off to more research and changing the hierarchy in the pages so that the text becomes so beautiful the reader don't even question it. He said to look into Stanley Morrison, Eric Gill and Beatrice Warde.

kinetic motion. the intense storyboard.

artist: Ellie Goulding
album: Lights (2011)
song: "This Love (Will Be Your Downfall)"

the intense storyboard.

anat cohen. the portfolio page initial layouts + first animated sequence.

Below are my first attempts at designing a layout for the Folly Jazz Series: Anat Cohen. None are successful, but may have a few small glimpses of a silver lining; just maybe.

option 1. text is ITC Century.

option 2. text is Helvetica Neue.

option 3. text is ITC Franklin.

animation so far. it needs to get slowed down + fixed in some moments. but here is thus far. sound clip is from Anat Cohen's Clarinetwork Live at the Village Vanguard(2010) and the specific song is "Sweet Georgia Brown."

crit notes with Sir Galloway.
on the portfolio page layouts:
We decided that I should go more with the gridded structure from option 3. As of right now, the type, ITC Franklin works the best for the portfolio page because it does not take away the attention from the images. Other things to consider: making the title smaller, adding in more information about the Folly Theater, add more white space, keep the poster as a large element, likes the context shots of the billboard + poster with bystander.

on the animation:
I should add more energy to the animation, make it more lively; think about people dancing to the music. I should then use that visualized dancing/energy and use that with the text coming in, to give it more personality.

advancement, layout by the end of class.

anat cohen. the promo materials.

the program cover.

smaller billboard.

larger billboard.

billboard in an outdoor environment.

animation storyboard 1+2.

animation storyboard 3.

brief crit with Sir Galloway.
We decided to push forward with the idea of storyboard 1 + 3. So, my hope is that by friday I have starts in both animations and then see which is working better. Sir Galloway enjoyed storyboard 1 because it pulled directly from the direction/angles of the text + combined instrument of the other promotional materials. He enjoyed the fluidity of storyboard 3. Let's see which works out better!

koenig. the layouts take 2.

edited spread from last class.

decision section cover for in class.

other section cover work.

text only spread.

image only spread.

crit with Assistant Professor Michael E. Kidwell.
Assistant Professor Michael E. Kidwell told me that I need to bring further away from my need for constant consistency. He stated that I would "get sick fast" of all the spreads being the same height. He suggested playing with the height of some elements within the spreads. He also suggested that I accept now that the text columns will not all line up, so I should change that now.

When Graphic Plays Beyond Narrative/Logorama. the response.

response to: this article + Logorama(2009).

It was an interesting concept that the film used logos that are + have been seen everyday, everywhere for the whole piece. There was a lot of background that goes with each company, whether that be slogans, company motto, what they've tried to tell the public in the past and what we know about them. It adds a lot more to this piece because it brings in also our memories associated with that food, or other past memories in our life that were sparked upon seeing a logo. The overall set up of the whole film being set in Hollywood + LA really makes sense too, as that's where many people in the US want to be and where you go to be seen. Personally it brought back a lot of memories because I've been driven near LA and through "Hollywood" before...so the thought and memories of driving around and walking around there all popped in my head, which contrasted with the idea of the film, but it brought more of a connection for me to the film. So, I would say that graphic elements can really help the viewer get more involved in the piece, get a connection faster to the piece, which is really a helpful tool. If you can get a viewer emotionally involved in a piece, you can often get them to not look away; we're always looking for connections to people, places, things.

In the article it states that the video "is a carefully instigated scenario that took on challenging artistic as well as technical decisions." This is true, because they did bring in all of these different logos + companies, decisions had to be made that did not make the piece look as if it was thrown together. There is a nice fluid movement throughout the film that melds together easily recognizable logos, some that I've forgotten and some that I've never seen. The plot itself needed to have the small moments where there were confrontations or a notion made to competitive companies such as the various fast food restaurants. An interesting moment was when one of the Original Pringles man said to the other "They never want the original anymore." What an interesting moment; that could have been a direct reference to consumption in general. I mean look at technology, we are never happy with the first or old version, we always want the newer and supposedly better version. But in general, most companies change logos through the years; we're trying to find what is going to best strike someone's attention.

The one thing that the movie really had going for it that involved the graphics/logos was all of the connotation that we as consumers had with each company going into the movie. Even as I laughed along at moments with the film, or a bit horrifically looked on in some moments, the actions and gestures of the "characters" did not fully shock me. It was almost as if I had already associated those characteristics with the companies prior to seeing them be morphed into characters. Putting Ronald McDonald as the villain in the piece really makes sense; I'm not sure there is another company that has such a bright logo that is supposed to make you happy with it's bright colors, but has really taken over the whole world. I read an article a few weeks ago that McDonald's is opening a vegan fast food place in India and I think that someone recently told me that McDonald's is branching out into another fast food place. So it really made sense to me that Ronald McDonald was the villain  It was a bit ironic that he got knocked off his bike by Weight Watchers and all of the interactions with other fast food restaurants, such as Big Boy who bites McDonald's arm to get away.

anat cohen. final program cover + billboards.

for reference; this is the final folly poster.

program cover.
My focus for the cover was to keep with the idea of the intimateness of performances. I tried the text on the 12 degree angle that it is on the poster, but it was not working with the rest of the composition. I also tried the image alone and the image and text on the 12 degree angle, but it was just not aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

1400 x 400px billboard.
For the billboard, I was keeping in mind the idea of how short of a time span that the viewers will have to see was very small in the range of a few seconds. I kept with the same angled text from the poster and same angle of the combined instrument. I dropped quartet down a few sizes to add more hierarchy to the composition.

792 x 264 px billboard.

post Sir Galloway small crit.
I need to still work more with the billboard to bring a closer connection to the program cover and final poster.

kinetic motion. story+main characters.

the first plot idea.
baby krakens are alone + get more of their kind to come together + they all jump up on a pirate ship + sink it + one of the 2 original krakens die.

*the exact colors of these baby krakens are to be decided later.

koenig type + first attempt layout.

layout.

layout + grids.

layout2.

type choices.

anat cohen. promo material digital sketches.

Based off of Sir Galloway's feedback last class on my sketches, I entered the digital realm and worked with the ideas that we had narrowed me down to. I feel that for the program cover although there still is hierarchy it is more like a slight shift of hands than in the poster when it is overpoweringly a contrasted hierarchy. I struggled a lot with the billboard and trying to figure how much or sparse I should be with text and image.
program cover options 1-3.
program cover options 4-5.
program cover options 6-8.
