“Design is the application of intent - the opposite of
happenstance, and an antidote to accident.” -Robert L. Peters
To me, there is never design without meaning; there is
always a reason behind it. Even though when first designing it may not be fully
clear why a designer is creating as they are; it is because they have yet to
understand the meaning themselves. I do not believe in art or design simply for
the sake of creation; I believe in art and design, compositions are always
created with purpose. This is the same idea that Peters is expressing in his
quote on design. He is saying that there is no chance; design is done for a
purpose. There can only be design, where it solves a problem; there are no
solutions without problems/meanings. This corresponds with AIGA’s mission is
“to advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital
cultural force,” as well as be able “to discover it (design), discuss it,
understand it, appreciate it, be inspired by it.” Both AIGA and Peters believe
that the focus of design is on the impact and that design is done for purpose.
