Helfand ScreenSpace response.

Helfland states in this article that art and the exact form of the Internet has not really changed over the course of its life and I get that. I fully realize that the main changes that have been with the Internet over its short life have been mainly stylistic. The reason though that it has not changed too more in the way in which we use it is the lack of knowledge. I fully realize that the idea of us having created a technology and not being able to fully use and understand it sounds very odd, but it really is what happened. The reason that we have been unable to fully advance into a new frontier of art and design is because we’re only slowly learning how to use and change what has been established. All of our work with design and the Internet has been solely focused on manipulation and working with things that have already been established.

As a world, community, or at least at the level of individuals, we have become nothing but lazy. With each new advancement in technology or changes to daily life, we have seen that as a reason to make our lives easier, “more simple.” Thus, we have continued to create more and newer technologies that aim at making our lives easier, giving us more time to “relax” or enjoy our lives, while at the same time, causing us to seek and find comfort in the way we currently live. Basically, we (as the populous) no longer have much to strive for, we see no need to change the world that we’re living in, in any format so we have not yet progressed Internet technology enough to change anything more than the mere style of information upon a computer screen.
