experimentation write up. introduction. hello.

Typography, the visual word experiments that cannot only explain underlying messages/themes/ideas but also send the viewer to another world. My investment in life is focused in experiences, people, events, places…basically anything that is rooted in memory or reasoning. My focus thus, will be on creative writing, the written portrayal of thoughts.

Albert Camus is one of my favorite authors. His work is heavily philosophy/psychology based, often revolving around fictionalized stories. In general his works tend to stray from heavily emotional and focuses instead on the facts of the events. Although work in general that I enjoy tends to be emotional and more so heavily focused the interworking of the mind, Camus is one of my favorites for his ability to take away that emotion that often can make a piece too dense, too much information thrown at the reader. It’s almost as if Camus leaves the reader the ability to add in that emotion or almost feel as disconnected from the events as the character is feeling in any given situation. Or, it could be some form of social judgment of people overreacting to situations, often making life’s events seem much more impactful than they really are.

My thought for further exploration with this is to use quotes from his books and find some form of social interaction to further impact the world. Books, words, ideas in general are often overlooked unless they hold some form of a tie/impact on the audience…and with the amount of not necessary illiterate public, but the avoidance to read; the message of the inter mind workings needs to be more easily accessible.

KMFDM + Björk are two of my favorite music artists. KMFDM is more heavily focused in the anti-propaganda propaganda. Their new album, coming out at the end of this month was inspired by Pussy Riot. KMFDM has been together as a band now, for nearly 30 years, continuing to attract fans of many ages. Their lyrics are often abstract to poke fun at trends or hot topics in media or popular culture. Björk’s music is much more abstract and seem to me to not necessarily be able to be sung by just anyone and thus not often covered that much. Her ability to add a unique singing voice not only adds meaning to her songs but further illustrates how poetic her lyrics are.

My thoughts for further exploration is to work more with pulling lyrics out of context and basing their effectiveness verse on their own; where they just as impactful without the music as they were with it?

Ultimately I want to look at the way in which creative writing/literature/ideas are produced in the world, able to attract and affect audiences. In the end, if I get there I want to figure out the most effective way to express thoughts+memories+ideas. Is that in the voice, via humor, tone, expression (or lack thereof), presentation, with visual, or is it something else? I have a few of my own creative writing pieces that I wish to produce into a more personalized physical experience and am looking the best way to produce that. It’s unclear as to whether or not that piece produced will be the main product of this class, or if the focus will be on exploring all semester with different expressive formats.
