Fringe Festival History.
"Our roots trace to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, which spontaneously erupted in 1947. Eight groups, not invited to perform in the larger Edinburgh Festival of the Arts, created makeshift theaters on the outskirts - or "fringe" - of the established festival. Soon the Fringe Festival gained a large and loyal following, outstripping the mainstream festival.

Fringes around the world have adapted a simple formula that was created in Edinburgh. The main principles were to provide all artists (both emerging and established) with the opportunity to produce their work no matter the content, form or style, and to make the event as affordable and accessible as possible for the members of the community, empowering audiences with the ability to decide for themselves the truly great productions from the good, the bad and the gloriously disastrous.

To this day, the guiding principle of Fringe Festivals worldwide involve uncensored artistic expression, accessibility and community development. Fringing encourages artists and audiences to explore boundaries and to make bold choices in the creation - or enjoyment - of art." - KC Fringe website.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
"The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world and takes place every August for three weeks in Scotland’s capital city.

Every year thousands of performers take to a multitude of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, musicals, operas, music, exhibitions and events.

Our story dates back to 1947, when eight theatre groups turned up uninvited to perform at the (then newly formed) Edinburgh International Festival, an initiative created to celebrate and enrich European cultural life in the wake of the Second World War. Not being part of the official programme of the International festival didn’t stop these performers – they just went ahead and staged their shows anyway. Year on year more and more performers followed their example and in 1958 the Festival Fringe Society was created in response to the success of this growing trend. The Society formalised the existence of this collective of performances, provided information to artists, published the Fringe programme and created a central box office. Its constitution was written in line with the ethos that brought these theatre companies to Edinburgh back in 1947: that the Society was to take no part in vetting the festival’s programme. To this day that policy remains at the core of our festival and we’re proud to include in our programme anyone with a story to tell and a venue willing to host them." via https://www.edfringe.com/

"The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival on Earth, an inspiring celebration of the best performance and entertainment coming out of every continent of our planet. In 2012 we enjoyed a record-breaking 2,695 different shows staging 42,096 performances in 279 venues by 22,457 performers."

KC Fringe answered design brief.

What do you do for your customers? (Not what you produce, what need in their lives do you fulfill?)
The Kansas City Fringe fulfills the need to explore edgy art. The need try new art genres that our audience has never experienced before. We fulfill the need to see live production at an affordable cost. We provide a place for local artists to explore their art as well.

Why does it matter?
It matters because people want to explore arts and we makes art accessible. Many cultures believe art is necessary for life and part of the human experience. When Churchill was approached about cutting funding for arts to support war he said, then what are we fighting for?

What do you do differently from all your competitors?
We do not have competitors. We provide many genres of art in a short time frame. The Fringe is affordable for artists and audience. We can bring larger audiences to artists by combing publicity for many. No one else does that.

Can you prove this?
We research other venues available to artists plus costs of tech, ticketing, and promotion. There is no other arts organization in our city that provides that.

What adjectives would your best client use to describe you?
Our clients are our artists who would say we are affordable, inclusive, easy to work with, and encouraging.

How would a stranger off the street describe your work environment?
Our work environment is chaotic, crazy, freakishly organized, friendly, creative, resourceful, and flexible.

What “Me Too’s” must you avoid? / What services do you offer that other organizations do too?
Art, theater, dance, fashion, are all available through other outlets but we offer things in each of these fields you won’t see anywhere else.

Define your culture in one word:
Fringey!

Define your work in one sentence:
Fringe is a place where people can take chances, not only as an artist but as an audience member.

logo wise: each year KC Fringe has a different logo on the cover of the program and t-shirts. the only consistency that they've had since year one is the orange swirl.

promotions: normally just photographs of the performers.

for year 10: they're looking for something big, maybe even a new logo, something to use across all forms of promotional materials that would be instantly recognizable as the festival. They have been modeling their operations mostly off of Minneapolis' Fringe. For the last few years they have been using this little logo guy. Minneapolis' Fringe used this little guy for all of their materials for instant recognition.
