Do you know what/where
Manheim Park is?
Yes. It’s east of Troost. There are a lot of older buildings
from the early 1900s and so. It’s also run down in some places.
Do you think it’s a
safe place to be in?
I wouldn’t feel comfortable living there myself. But crime
happens everywhere. It’s neutral for me.
Why wouldn’t you feel
comfortable living there?
It’s far from where I work and parking kind of sucks down
there.
How do you know when you go somewhere that the area is safe
or not?
It’s all in how well the area is kept. Are the street lights
on and working? Does the front yard look like the junk yard? Do the houses look
as if they are actually being cared for?
If you’ve heard an
area is unsafe, would you still go there?
I would be less likely to visit, if I heard that.
Are there any specific
elements in a town that you look for or would cause you to stop and have a look
around?
Art installations, fountains, memorials, murals, historical
markers of sorts, interesting looking houses.
If a town already has
a dangerous reputation, what do you think would best help to make it more
welcoming?
Once an area has the
reputation of being dangerous, the only thing you can really do is rebuild the
community around it. You have to start with safe environment for children to
grow and prosper as well as have things for them to do after school other than
cause trouble.
What kind of stuff for
children to do?
Community center, after school programs, stuff like that.

Do you know
what/where Manheim Park is?
I know where, 39th and Troost. It’s a relatively big park
by Hyde Park.
Do you
think it’s a safe place to be in?
It's subjective. Depending on what type of
socio-economic area you are comfortable in. I think during the day it would be
a relatively safe place for most people to be in, I myself have never hung out
there so I can't be for sure. Judging by the location I could see how it could
be rough during certain hours of the day
How do you know when you go somewhere that the area is safe or not?
Crime level of the neighborhoods directly
surrounding the area of question. The type of activities that "go
down" in that particular area, and yes of course the people who frequent
that area.
If you’ve
heard an area is unsafe, would you still go there?
As a single multi-racial adult male if there
were something of interest there I would probably still go. I think the answer
would change depending on sex, race, age, and comfort level with urban city
life.
Are there
any specific elements in a town that you look for or would cause you to stop
and have a look around?
Yes, state of properties located around the
area, type of individuals who live in the area, the element of crime in that
area, the presence of law enforcement in the area. If I see a liquor store,
pawn shop, liquor store, churches chicken, then I generally know what I'm
dealing with.
If a town
already has a dangerous reputation, what do you think would best help to make
it more welcoming?
Beautification of the area, development of
local businesses, bulked up law enforcement presence, increased cultural diversity
